Notify Both

Hear notifications on the speaker and Bluetooth headphones on Xiaomi

For Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones with HyperOS

Short answer

When Bluetooth headphones or earbuds are connected, HyperOS plays notification sounds only on the headset, and there is no setting to play them on the phone speaker as well. To hear every notification in both places, use an app that replays the sound on both outputs, such as Notify Both, and allow it the few background settings HyperOS turns off by default.

Why notifications only play on your Bluetooth headphones

Android decides where each kind of sound plays. Music and videos go to the headset. Notification sounds follow the same route: as soon as a Bluetooth headset is connected, they play there and nowhere else. HyperOS on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO phones works the same way.

That is fine while the headset is on your ears. But earbuds stay connected while they sit in their case, and headphones stay connected on the desk next to you. Every WhatsApp message, email and reminder then plays silently into a headset nobody is wearing, and you only find out later.

Phone calls and alarms are different. Android plays the ringtone and alarms on the phone speaker and the headset together, so you hear them either way. Notifications get no such treatment.

Is there a setting for this in HyperOS?

No. Android has no option to send notification sounds to the phone speaker and a Bluetooth headset at the same time, and HyperOS does not add one. Turning Bluetooth off works, but then you lose the headset. Changing the notification sound or volume does not help, because the problem is where the sound plays, not how loud it is.

How Notify Both fixes it

Notify Both is an Android app that notices when a notification makes a sound and plays that same sound where you choose. It uses the alarm channel, which Android is allowed to play on the speaker and the headset together. You pick one of three options:

Each app keeps its own notification sound. The app stays quiet when the phone is on silent, vibrate or Do Not Disturb, and during phone calls. While you watch a video or listen to music, the headset already plays the sound, so the app only adds the speaker.

It does not read, save or send the text of your messages. It works on Android 8 or newer and is built and tested on HyperOS. It is free for 7 days, then a one-time purchase.

The HyperOS settings it needs

HyperOS is strict with apps that run in the background. Out of the box it switches off several things an app like this depends on, which is why notification apps often stop working on Xiaomi phones. Notify Both shows each setting with a button that opens the right screen and a green tick when it is done. It takes about two minutes:

  1. Allow notification access. HyperOS shows a red "Danger" warning here for every app that asks; tick the box and tap OK.
  2. Turn on Autostart, so HyperOS lets the app start in the background.
  3. Remove battery restrictions: allow background usage, choose Unrestricted, and set Battery saver to No restrictions.
  4. Turn off "Pause app activity if unused".
  5. Set the alarm volume at least as high as the notification volume, because the sounds play on the alarm channel.

The HyperOS setup guide shows every step with screenshots from a POCO phone.

If notifications still only play on the headset

Still stuck? In the app, turn on Keep a log, wait until the problem happens again, then tap Email log. We'll help you.
